Our story
Why Marula Nexus exists.
Marula Nexus is a young software company in Sandton. This is why it was started, where the name comes from, and the decisions about how it works that came before everything else.
The gap we kept seeing
Software delivery in South Africa often runs through more layers than the work needs — an account manager translating the brief, a bench somewhere else writing the code, and a client who only sees it at handover. Meanwhile the tooling underneath has changed completely. A small team of senior engineers can now deliver in weeks what used to justify a department and a year. Most delivery models have not caught up with that. Marula Nexus was built around it.
Where the name comes from
The marula is a Southern African tree with a broad, rounded canopy — familiar, deep-rooted, and unmistakable on the highveld. A nexus is a junction: the point where separate things meet. Put together they describe the company we wanted. Four disciplines — custom software, automation, consulting and managed services — meeting at one point, under one roof in Sandton. It is also, quite literally, our logo: three circles forming a canopy, with the junction cut out at the centre.
How we chose to work
Every change that reaches production is read by an experienced engineer. You talk to the people building your software, not to a layer above them. What is being built, what it costs and when it lands is written down before work starts. And you get the source, the pipeline and the documentation, so nothing about how we build is designed to keep you here. Those four decisions came first; everything else about the company followed from them.
Where this is going
We are a young company, and deliberately so — building a bench of senior engineers rather than a pyramid with a wide base. The plan is not to become the biggest consultancy in Gauteng. It is to stay small enough that the people who scoped your project are the people who deliver it, and good enough that this is never a compromise.
